There are plenty of fish in the sea. I have never really stopped to think about this, but I truly despise this sentence. It is often used as a metaphor to help someone get over a breakup. I don’t agree with the “just ignore someone’s feelings, it will get better” vibe of this statement. Now I do try and promote an “all fish are important” view, but I cannot argue with the fact that some fish have a higher value. I do love catching a little Sergeant major, but any logical person would rather catch a five-hundred-pound Bluefin tuna. Metaphor aside, does that statement actually hold water?
The oceans are vast, and the amount of life in them is rather impressive. You will, however, find that there are large areas or regions of the ocean that contains comparatively very little fish. There is always a reason for fish to be in a certain habitat. Fish don’t just hang out in the blue for nothing. Add to that something like commercial fishing, and the use of the word plenty might be in jeopardy. All of that being said, there is still more diversity and abundance of fish in the ocean than anywhere else that we know of.
It is for that very reason that I yearn for coastal fishing. The variety of fish you can catch when using the same bait. Making a small change can lead to something completely different showing up. You truly never know what you can get when fishing in the ocean. I had to then jump at the opportunity to do some fishing on the California coast when unforeseen circumstances changes my traveling plans. Morro Bay was the location for my first encounter with the famous Gold Coast. Not knowing anything about the area or the fish around, I thought it should be easy to get on something, at least. I mean, there are plenty of fish in the sea, right?
It did take a couple of hours, but the wife and I did manage
to catch three to four different species between us. Most of these catches were
in the bay and not the true ocean. But we did also try fishing off of some
piers out in the sea without catching anything. I had a great time, and
spending more time is the key to truly unlocking the fishing in any area. But
in a place like Morro Bay, where there is abundant life, the pickings seemed
slim. The fact remains, there are fish in the sea. It is maybe just that one
word, plenty, that we need to reconsider.
