Stewarts Point is located in the northern parts of the
Overton arm of Lake Mead. Many people have recommended this area, with numerous
tall tales of fishing trips that involve coolers full of fish. This may sound
unbelievable, but on any given day this can happen anywhere on Lake Mead.
People seem to think it occurs more often in this area of the lake. Maybe the remoteness of this area has an impact on the frequency for this?
It is, however, worth mentioning that this area is not void
of people or fishing boats. In fact, you will hardly ever be the only person in
this area. This is a very popular spot for camping with both RV’s and tents
visible on the hillsides. There are many campsites across Lake Mead but this
one seems to draw in crowds. And I get it, I mean just look at it. For some
reason, people love staring east or west across water.
Comparing this location to some South African waters again
highlights some dramatic differences. This is the type of location that would
have been turned into a vacation destination in SA. One with stores, chalets,
amenities, and dedicated camping spots. This is something that would suit this
area, however, this is Lake Mead. Overton Beach was exactly such a vacation
“town”. Today it is a ghost town closed to the public.
Lowering water level was the cause of death for Overton
Beach. This is why Stewarts point has an undeveloped feeling. This would be the
ideal area to build a lodge if Lake Mead had a consistent water level. It is
the rise and fall of the water that keeps this area so rustic. Even though I
can see the potential in this area for a resort, it might be better as is. It
is already a busy spot despite not having anything but one communal restroom.
Changing things here might make it lose its charm. Somehow it seems that nature
always knows what’s best for us even if we don’t.
