Lorenzi Park, Las Vegas, Nevada

Fishing is not the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about Las Vegas. The city is after all in a desert. Yet, there is some good fishing in this corner of the world. Most fishing locations are a reasonably short drive away, but there is some fishing close to downtown as well. Sunset Park is known for fishing, but just a few miles north of the strip is another park that offers fishing; Lorenzi Park.

Lorenzi Park has had several facelifts and has been known for many things. For starters, the pond here is known by some as Twin Lakes. The pond is divided into two ponds connected by a channel. This park is known locally as being on the wrong side of the tracks, so to speak. The Park itself does not look like it, but a short drive around the neighborhood does reveal a lot. Nevertheless, this is still a good park with good facilities. There is even a primary school next to the pond.

In some ways, this park makes me think about my childhood. The neighborhood I grew up in had a similar reputation. Poverty and crime within a community of good, kind people. We even had a park next to my school. But here lies the difference, the kids playing area in my old park seems like a junkyard in comparison. And what a different place it would have been if that park had a fishing pond. Better yet, one that gets an annual stocking of catfish and trout. Would I have spent my entire childhood in that park?

But even here, there are some lessons to be learned. What drew me to this park in the first place was a Google search about the park that stated the pond contained crappie. My first outing was a couple of hours of small jig fishing to find some crappie. I do believe that years of fishing for food and not sport, have beaten me to the chase. No more crappie, no more bass. All that remains are the carp no one wants, and the fish that get stocked. I love fishing in this park, but at the same time, I feel it needs to be protected. So, handle the fish with care and release them safely when you don’t intend to keep them.
