Approximately 26 miles southeast from the hustle and bustle of the busy Las Vegas, is a small town called Boulder City. This town is renowned and was established for housing the builders and construction workers that built Hoover Dam. It is, however, not the historical nature of the town that drew me in, but the different feel and ambiance this town has to offer.
At first, it was hard for me to pinpoint the exact thing
that made this town feel different from other places I have seen in Nevada. I
now know that it is small changes this town has made that draw in a certain
crowd, one that helps promote a more relaxed atmosphere. Boulder City is one of
only two towns in Nevada that prohibits gambling, meaning the odd gas station
or bar does not have gambling machines. The streets along with the layout of
the town also create a small-town vibe.
In a way, these aspects give the town a peaceful and
laid-back feeling. This brings me to the picture and more importantly, the
pond. This is the fishing pond at Veteran’s Memorial Park, a 25-acre park
filled with numerous activities. Like many ponds in the Clark County area, this
pond also gets the annual stockings of trout and catfish. But unlike the ponds
at Sunset and Lorenzi Parks, this pond generally offers a more relaxed, less
crowded experience.
I frequented the park in winter for trout fishing,
especially on the slower days of fishing at Lake Mead. The few trips a made to
the park during summer was somewhat filled with difficulty to find fish. Not
having the right gear and baits was part of the problem, but the Covid-19
pandemic also created some fish stocking problems, with this pond not getting
its share of stockings. Maybe that might be a blessing in disguise, ensuring
the quiet tranquility of the park.
